Abstract
879,158. Handling nuclear fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 11, 1960 [Jan. 19, 1959; June 23, 1959], Nos. 1957/59 and 21485/59. Class 39(4). [Also in Group XXV] Relates to a coupling device for releasable connections of two members of the kind comprising a tubular part 13 of one member, a sleeve part 17 mounted around the tubular part and a cylindrical part 12 of the other member engageable within the tubular part, the tubular part having in its wall at least three symmetrically disposed apertures 15 each containing, a ball 14, the cylindrical part having an annular recess 16 for engagement in holding manner by the balls in the connecting state of the device, in which state the sleeve part occupies a position in which it retains the balls in their holding position, and the sleeve part having an internal annular recess 21 registrable with the apertures on axial movement of the sleeve part, whereby the balls can move outwardly relative to the tubular part to release the tubular and cylindrical parts and hence the two members for connection together. According to the invention the sleeve part 17 is provided externally with gear teeth 18 and internally with a screw thread 19 engaged with a screw thread 20 on the tubular part so that on engaging a remotely driven pinion with the gear teeth the sleeve part can be rotated into either of two positions in which the tubular part and the cylindrical part are connected and disconnected respectively. As shown, the device is applied to releasably coupling the top of a string of fuel elements 10 for a nuclear reactor to a neutron shield plug 11. The elements are housed in a tubular container 23 suspended from a grab 24 having jaws 25, the grab having an aperture 26 which is aligned with an access passage 27 through which the pinion is engaged with the gear teeth 18 to couple or uncouple the fuel elements and the plug 11 while the container 23 is suspended from the grab 24 in a transit channel 22. The neutron shield plug and a biological shield plug (not shown) may be provided with similar coupling devices whereby these plugs can be uncoupled remotely subsequent to uncoupling of the connected shield plugs and fuel elements and coupled remotely prior to coupling of the connected shield plugs with a fuel element string.
