Abstract

Chlorobenzoic acids are prepared by oxidising di-, tri- or tetra-chlorotoluenes with nitric acid at a temperature in excess of the boiling point of the nitric acid and at pressures not in excess of atmospheric pressure. Preferred temperatures are 170-220 DEG C. The reaction may be carried out batchwise or continuously and apparatus for the continuous reaction is described. In examples the corresponding chlorotoluenes are oxidised to chlorobenzoic acids including 2 : 3- and 2 : 6-di-, 2 : 3 : 6-tri- and 2 : 3 : 4 : 5-, 2 : 3 : 5 : 6-and 2 : 3 : 4 : 6-tetra-chlorobenzoic acids.
