Abstract

In a process for the manufacture of anthraquinone, 1,4-naphthoquinone is heated under superatmospheric pressure with butadiene in nitrobenzene at a temperature within the range of 70 DEG C. to 120 DEG C. until tetrahydroanthraquinone is formed and then the latter is heated in nitrobenzene at a temperature of at least 180 DEG C. until anthraquinone is formed. A polymerization inhibitor, e.g. p-tertbutylpyrocatechol may be employed in the process. Examples are furnished.
