Abstract
Phthalic acid is prepared by a method comprising slowly adding nitric acid of at least 30 per cent concentration to a toluic acid in the fluid state while removing water by distillation. Preferably the addition takes place at a temperature above 140 DEG C. in an inert organic medium which is liquid at the reaction temperature. Benzoic acid, mineral oil, chlorinated diphenyls, diphenyl, and diphenyl ethers are examples of suitable inert media. Mixtures of phthalic acids are obtained by using mixtures of the corresponding toluic acids as starting materials. Specification 720,384 is referred to.
