Abstract
An aqueous emulsion of an epoxy resin contains as an emulsifying agent a mixture of mono-, di- or tri-ethanolamine and an unsaturated fatty acid having at least two ethylenically unsaturated groups in the molecule (e.g. the fatty acids of linseed oil, soyabean oil, tall oil, dehydrated castor oil or wood-resin). The epoxy resin is preferably a glycidyl polyether and may be modified by a phenol, an amine or a fatty acid of a drying or semi-drying oil. The epoxy resin is generally emulsified while dissolved in an organic solvent (e.g. xylene or white spirits). The emulsions may be used as air-drying or stoving coating compositions and may also contain (a) an alkyd resin or a phenol-, urea- or melamine-formaldehyde resin; (b) a pigment, e.g. iron oxide, barytes, titanium dioxide, chromium oxide, cadmium sulphide, cadmium selenide, carbon black, sienna, umber or a mixture of red iron oxide and barytes; (c) a drier, e.g. lead or cobalt naphthenate; (d) a sequestering agent, e.g. citric acid or sodium hexametaphosphate; (e) a curing agent, e.g. the morpholine salt of toluene sulphonic acid; or (f) a thickening agent.
