Abstract
500,872. Polyvinyl ether compositions. CARPMAEL, A. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges.) Aug. 11, 1937, No. 22116. [Class 2 (iii)] Surfaces are protected or decorated by applying thereto a paint, varnish, or lacquer having a binder comprising an aqueous emulsion or dispersion of a polyvinyl ether and an emulsifying agent, the ether being one which is insoluble in water and does not in the absence of an emulsifying agent form an emulsion with water, is not of waxy consistency, and does not contain hydrophile groups. Ethers specified are the polymers of vinyl-ethyl, -propyl, - isopropyl, -butyl, and -isobutyl ethers; the polymers of the vinyl ethers of the alcohols with 5 to 9 carbon atoms obtained by hydrogenation of carbon monoxide, and polymers from mixtures of these ethers. Specified emulsifying agents are the salts of sulphonic acids of polyalkylated aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. the di-isopropylnaphthalene sulphonic acids or dibutylnaphthalene sulphonic acids, salts of crude oil sulphonic acids or of sulphonated fatty acids, the compounds obtained by the action of thylene oxide upon hydroxyl derivatives of compounds with relatively long aliphatic chains such as castor oil or higher aliphatic alcohols, the salts of ammonia with higher molecular carboxylic acids, and albumen. To the emulsions may be added other film-forming substances, e.g. natural or artificial resins and lacs, fillers, pigments, and colours such as iron or chromium oxide, lithopone, titanium white, ochre, or organic dyestuffs which may be precipitated on an inorganic carrier. When the polyvinyl ether or an additional filmforming substance has or contains constituents which have double bonds which make possible drying with the uptake of oxygen, heavy metal compounds which promote such drying may be added. In an example, polyvinylisobutyl-ether is emulsified by an ammoniacal solution of casein, and the emulsion mixed with lithopone and chromium oxide green. Specifications 346,267 ; 402,513, [Group III], 437,446, 466,173, and 490,032 are referred to.
