Abstract

A pigment paste comprises water, 100 parts of pigment and 1 to 50 parts of a pulverulent water-insoluble copolymer of styrene with a half ester of maleic acid in which the ester group consists of a mixture of methyl and secondary butyl groups, the copolymer being present as the ammonium, morpholine or alkylamine salt, the alkylamine being volatile below 100 DEG C. In its preparation the copolymer is added to an aqueous slurry of pigment and solubilized by the addition of the alkaline agents. A pigmented oil coating composition may be prepared by adding a drying oil, e.g. linseed oil, to the aqueous phase and agitating until the pigment and copolymer are transferred to the oil phase which is then decanted. Pigments mentioned are organic lakes, toluidine toners phthalocyanin blue, ultramarine blue, lithopone, bentonite, mica and titanium dioxide. Other film-forming materials may be dispersed to give water-paints, inks, or oil-based coating compositions which on drying are insensitive to water and alkali resistant. They are added as liquids, e.g. a drying oil, as organic solutions, e.g. an oil-modified alkyd and a butylated methylol-melamine in a xylolbutanol solvent or as aqueous dispersions, e.g. polystyrene and butadiene-styrene copolymer (preferably those with at least 50 per cent. styrene). Other film-formers include natural resins, unsaturated polyester resins, phenol, melamine- and urea-aldehydes, aldehyde-alcohols, and polymers and copolymers of vinylidene compounds. Plasticizers such as partially hydrogenated terphenyl, butyl benzyl phthalate and di-octyl phthalate, driers, e.g. manganese naphthenate, anti-foaming agents, e.g. pine oil, and viscosity improving agents, e.g. methyl cellulose, may be added prior to or at the same time as the film-formers and in the case of oil-based compositions, thinners or solvents such as turpentine, benzene, xylol or mineral spirits may be used.
