Abstract

875,178. Stud and socket fastenings. VESUVIUS CRUCIBLE CO. May 22, 1959 [Sept. 8, 1958], No. 17474/59. Class 44. A stopper for a ladle for molten metal includes a refactory head 2 having a well 4 extending downwardly for receiving a rod 15, having a lateral projection 17 at its bottom end positionable by downward insertion in the well and locking means being applicable to the head and rod to overlie at least a portion of the lateral projection to block withdrawal of the rod from the well whereby to attach the rod to the head, the locking means being the sole means overlying the lateral projection. As shown, the locking means consists of a lugged insert ring 9 lugs 10 of which are engageable beneath shoulders 12 in portions of the well 4 upon rotation of the ring through 90 degrees, and locking members 14 which are dropped into the portions of the ring to prevent rotation of the ring back to its initial position. In another construction, Fig. 6 (not shown), the locking means is constituted by an externally threaded collar, which may be split, and which surrounds the rod 15 and is screwed into the well of the stopper to overly the lateral projection.
