Abstract
873,851. Aircraft ; boundary layer control ; submarine vessels. MERCIER, P. July 28, 1958 [Aug. 7, 1957], No. 24258/58. Classes 4, 113 and 114. [Also in Group XXVI] Means for improving the propulsion of streamlined bodies, such as aircraft and submarines, which have a surface region where transition of boundary layer flow from laminar to turbulent initiates, comprises power operated propulsion means at the rear of the body arranged coaxially with the axis of symmetry of the body, a first tubular element supported in coaxial and radially spaced relationship with the propulsion means, and a second tubular element surrounding a rear part of the body aft of said region and radially spaced therefrom to define an annular passage, the second element having an external diameter smaller than that of the first and having a longitudinal section of such aerofoil contour as to accelerate the fluid flow induced through the passage by the propulsion means. Fig. 2 shows the rear of an aircraft or submarine 1, fins 5 supporting the tubular elements 2, 3 shown in section. A screw propeller 11 and impeller 13 provide forward motion, and vanes 18 straight out the fluid flow from the impeller. Control surfaces 7, 8 are movable about vertical and lateral axes respectively. Power for the propulsion means may be transmitted by mechanical, hydromechanical, pneumatic, or electric means. The annular members 2, 3 are stated to reduce the power needed for a given speed, and with the propeller to energize and prevent separation of the boundary layer.
