In a gas cooker having a burner, for instance a pilot burner 7, located in an inaccessible position, a flash tube 22 extends from a position adjacent the pilot burner 7 but is not in the path of gas from the pilot burner 7 and a lighting jet 15 is interposed between the pilot burner 7 and the flash tube 22 and is provided with two ports 20, 21 one to direct gas into the flash tube 22 the other to direct gas towards the pilot burner 7, the supply of gas to the lighting jet 15 being controlled by means responsive to the pilot burner flame so as to be cut off when the pilot burner is lit. The lighting jet 15 is supplied with gas through a spring biased valve 17 carried by a bimetal element 19 heated by the pilot burner. The flash back in the tube 22 ignites the gas at port 21 which ignites the other port 20 which ignites the pilot burner 7. The grill burner 3 is ignited by a lighting burner 10 projecting downwardly from the grill burner and ignited by a flash tube 9 extending from the pilot burner 7. The oven burner is ignited by a flash tube 8. A pipe may extend from the hollow body 16 of the lighting jet 15 to a chamber including a diaphragm which is biased to hold open a cut-off valve in the supply line to the main burners. When the valve 17 is open, in the absence of a pilot flame, gas pressure acts on the diaphragm to close the cut-off valve and when the valve 17 closes, in the presence of a pilot flame, the gas in the diaphragm chamber leaks away through the ports 20, 21 to allow the cut-off valve to open and supply the main burners.
