Class 123(1) [Also in Group XXV] A cylindrical pressure vessel such as an autoclave or vulcaniser which is partially sunk in a pit has a hinged door which is arranged to lift vertically as it begins to open so that its lower edge clears the edge of the pit. The lifted door can then be swung open over the floor in which the pit is sunk whereby the size of the pit in front of the door can be much reduced. As shown, the door 1 is carried by a bracket 2 to which is affixed hinge bosses 2a, 2b within which is secured a hinge pin 3. The hinge pin is supported in hinge bosses 4, 8 secured to a bracket 5 fixed to the mouthpiece 6 of the vessel. The boss 4 constitutes a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder and the lower end of the pin 3 is fitted with a piston 7 operating in the cylinder. When the door is opened a few degrees it actuates a valve (not shown) to admit a pressure fluid under the piston 7 whereby the pin 3 is raised and lifts the door. As the lower edge of the door reaches the level of the floor a helical guide 9 welded along the pin 3 contacts a peg 10 and causes the door to swing open over the floor. To close the door the pressure fluid valve is opened and the guide means 9, 10 swings the door closed as it drops down into its lower position when it is almost shut. It can then be swung straight into the mouth of the vessel and sealed. In a modification guides are secured to the top of the door opening and the pit edge to prevent the moving door from coming into contact therewith.
