Abstract
A detergent composition in the form of a stable homogeneous aqueous suspension comprises by weight of the composition (a) 7-10% of a potassium alkylaryl sulphonate having at least one alkyl group containing 8-15 carbon atoms; (b) 5-8% of a sodium or potassium alkylbenzene sulphonate containing one or two alkyl groups, each containing no more than 3 carbon atoms; (c) 10-27% of potassium pyro- or tripoly-phosphate; (d) 4-7% of (i) a fatty mono-alkanolamide having 8-12 carbon atoms in the acyl group, or 9ii) the condensation product thereof with an equimolar proportion of ethylene oxide, or (iii) a fatty dialkanolamide having 8-18 carbon atoms in the acyl group; and (e) 0.1-3%, preferably 0.5-0.7%, of two or more cellulose derivatives which form a uniform stable suspension when added to the other ingredients, and at least one of which has soil-suspending properties. The composition generally also includes up to 6% of an alkali metal silicate, and has a pH of at least 11.4 which may be adjusted by the addition of potassium hydroxide. (a) has the general formula <FORM:0870081/III/1> where x is 1-5, and R is an alkyl group of 1-15 carbon atoms, at least one such group having not less than 8 carbon atoms; several such compounds are described, but the preferred one is potassium dodecyl-(propylene tetramer)-benzene sulphonate. (b) is preferably a mixture of substances; tetralin sulphonates, and xylene, toluene, and ethylbenzene sulphonates are specifically mentioned, but a commercial mixture of sodium xylene sulphonate isomers is preferred. (d) preferably comprises a mixture of lauric isopropanolamide and diethanolamide, but several other similar substances may be used. Suitable pairs of cellulose derivatives (e) comprise (1) carboxymethylcellulose and methylcellulose, (2) carboxymethylhydroxyethylcellulose and methylcellulose, and (3) similar mixtures in which the methylcellulose is replaced by carboxymethylmethylcellulose. Perfumes, dyes, and optical brighteners may also be incorporated.
