Abstract
A solder flux comprises, by weight, 82-95% Zn Cl2 and 5-18% of an alkali metal chloride mixture, said mixture consisting of 5-29% Na Cl, 21-61% KCl and 29-66% Li Cl. The flux is useful in the joining of Al and its alloys to Al and its alloys and Cu, without the use of solder. Alternatively, the flux may be sheathed in a Zn-base solder containing 0.1-3% Ag and optionally 0.3-0.5% Al. In two modifications the flux also contains (a) NiC2, the composition then consisting, by weight, of 90 parts ZuCl2 10 parts of the alkali metal chloride mixture and 1 part NiCl2, and (b) for the joining of Si-containing Al alloys, the chlorides of Cu, Pb and Cd, the composition then consisting of 83.5% ZnCl2, 10% of the alkali metal chloride mixture, 4-6% CuCl, 0.25-1.25% PbCl2 and 0.5-1.75% Cd Cl2. U.S.A. Specifications 1,293,823, 2,299,164, 2,299,165, 2,299,166, 2,299,167 and 2,299,168 are p referred to.
