865,627. Ironing-machines. MEANS & CO., F. W. Oct. 20, 1959, No. 35498/59. Class 138(2). [Also in Group XXXVII] Articles fed into an ironing- machine 12 at F can be selectively directed to an alternative discharge point at the delivery end D of the machine by operation of a switch 100 at the feed end, the time taken for the article to travel through the machine being allowed for by a " memory unit " 10. The articles are normally delivered on to a conveyer 112 but can be discharged on to a table 26 when a cam 106 is pivoted to the dotted-line position shown. The " memory unit ". 10 controls operation of the cam 106 and comprises a drum 27 which rotates constantly at a rate proportional to the rate of travel of the work through the machine. The drum 27 comprises a series of pins 50 which are selectively movable to switch-actuating position (50b) by means of an air cylinder 84 and plunger 86. The plunger 86 operates through the medium of a flexible cam strip 80. A pin 50 in the position 50b is adapted to contact the operating arm 52 of a switch 54 and is returned to its inoperative position by a cam 72. When switch 54 is closed it energizes a solenoid (not shown) for moving cam 106. Switch 54 is mounted on a bracket 60 the angular location of which is indicated by a pointer 116 and scale 118 and is adjustable. The articles are pressed between endless belts 16, 18 during travel through the machine. In the case of a multi-lane machine each lane is provided with a foot switch, memory unit, and selector cam.
