Abstract
863,359. Magnetic amplifiers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. April 18, 1957 [April 20, 1956], No. 12120/56. Class 40 (9). [Also in Group XXXV] A magnetic amplifier 11 has a control-winding 11b energized by two opposed input signals V C and V R connected through diodes 18, 20, shunted by resistors 19, 21. When one signal, e.g. V R , is much larger than the other, one diode, e.g. 18, blocks so that the control current through winding 11b is limited by the inclusion of a resistor, e.g. 19, in series with the winding. As both signals near equality, both diodes conduct and so the sensitivity of the system is increased. The battery E biases both diodes in the forward direction to determine the range of input signals over which the full sensitivity is available. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the battery E is omitted, and the amplifier is used to control the excitation of a D.C. generator (see Group XXXV). In another modification. Fig. 1 (not shown), the diodes are replaced by non-linear resistors which increase their resistance with applied voltage. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the diode/resistor networks and the control windings are duplicated to allow for control voltages of reversible polarity.
