Abstract
<PICT:0863240/III/1> <PICT:0863240/III/2> A drum, 2, for coating the surfaces of work-pieces is mounted within a ball-bearing 3 and has opposed closable openings 9, 10. The outer race of the bearing 3 is trunnion mounted so that the drum may be moving from a horizontal or inclined, charging, position to one in which the drum axis is vertical, as in Fig. 2 when the top closure is removed to admit a washing fluid and the opposite closure is replaced by a screen 11, barrelling being effected in either position by a drive from a motor 5 to the drum. The race 3 and trunnion bearings 4 may be located forward of the vertical centre line of the horizontal drum. A hopper 8, Fig. 3, may receive the contents of the drum when barrelling is completed; this hopper may also be used for charging through the opening 10. A perforated work-piece separator 12, may be attached to one opening whilst the other opening is closed by a cover 9, or it may be fitted with the screen 11. The drum is tilted to convey a portion of its contents into the separator 12 and, after returning to the horizontal, the drum and separator are rotated together, a spray 13 washing the contents of the separator, the perforations being of a size such that the treatment agent may fall into the receptacle 8 while the work-pieces are retained. A spiral 14 may be fitted within an extension of the separator, when the drum is rotated in one direction the spiral retains the work-pieces within the separator but when the drum is reversed the spiral expels them through the open end of the separator.
