Abstract

1,132,372. Blasting. BADISCHE MASCHINENFABRIK G.m.b.H. 17 March, 1966 [23 March, 1965], No. 11773/66. Heading B3D. Castings, forgings and the like are cleaned by being blasted by a centrifugal wheel 2 while in a drum 1 rotating about an axis inclined to the horizontal. The top end of the drum has a charging opening 3 covered by a stationary plate 4 comprising a pivoted cover 6; when the latter is opened, a batch of workpieces passes from a bin 7 into the drum. The bottom end of the drum comprises two parts 8, 9. The part 8 is secured to the wall of the drum and to a housing 10 mounted in a bearing 16. The part 9, forming a discharge cover, is carried by an arm 11 pivoted at 13 to the housing 10 and actuated by a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder 12 secured to a stationary part by a universal joint 15; a connecting link has a pivotal connection 14 with the arm 11 and is connected to the piston rod 12<SP>1</SP> by a bearing 14 so as to be freely rotatable about the axis of the cylinder 12. The parts 8, 9 are partially or entirely perforated so that blasting medium passes from the drum into a conveyor 17. When the batch of workpieces has been cleaned, the discharge cover 9 is opened to discharge the workpieces; at the same time or shortly before, the supply of abrasive medium to the wheel 2 is interrupted, the wheel continuing to rotate. The cover 9 opens when it is 30-120 degrees before its lowest position and closes when it is 30-120 degrees after its lowest position. A fresh batch is then admitted to the drum and the supply of blasting medium to the wheel 2 is restarted. The operations may be controlled manually or automatically.
