Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formul <FORM:0862052/IV (b)/1> wherein n is 1, 2 or 3, and acid addition salts of the compounds of the formula I, and the preparation thereof by condensing a 1-alkanoyl-2 - (21 - acylamino - ethyl) - 4,5 - dimethoxy - benzene with an appropriate halogenated benzaldehyde, cyclizing the substituted styryl ketone obtained to give a substituted 1-styryl-3,4-dihydro-isoquinoline of the formula III, reducing the latter to produce a 1-phenethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-isoquinoline of the formula II and N-methylating this compound to yield a compound of the formula I and, if desired, converting this final product into an acid addition salt. The compounds of the formula I and the salts thereof have analgesic and antispasmodic activity. Specification 862,053 is referred to.
