Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0843908/IV(b)/1> (wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, R2 a methyl or ethyl group and R3 a methyl, ethyl or ethynyl group) and their acid addition salts, and the preparation thereof by reacting 3-hydroxy- or 3-methoxy-morphinane (racemic or optically active) with an alkyl halide of the general formula: <FORM:0843908/IV(b)/2> (wherein X represents a halogen atom), and, if desired, converting the product into an acid addition salt. (-)-3-Methoxy-N-(Y : Y-dimethylallyl) - morphinane can also be made by methylating the corresponding 3-hydroxy compound with phenyltrimethylammonium hydroxide. The products are useful as antitussive agents, and the laevo-rotatory isomers also as analgesics.
