Abstract
861,605. Two-stroke engines. MEIER, H. R. E., and HOOPER, B. Nov. 4, 1958 [Nov. 7, 1957], No. 34664/57. Class 7(2). A control valve C at the crank-case end of the transfer passage B of a two-stroke crank-case compression engine is timed to open immediately after a pressure wave, created by the admission of burnt gases into the passage B upon opening of the transfer port D, has been reflected by the closed valve C, whereby the low-pressure zone behind the pressure wave assists the flow from the crank-case through the transfer passage. The valve C, which may be an automatic non-return valve, a mechanically operated poppet, slide, or rotary valve, or alternatively a port or ports in the piston skirt co-operating with ports in the cylinder wall communicating with the transfer passage, is arranged to close about the time that the flow of gases from the crank-case into the transfer passage ceases. Two or more transfer passages may be provided.
