859,497. Sound-film speed-controlling devices. PAPINI, G. Oct. 16, 1957 [Oct. 16, 1956], No. 32337/57. Class 40 (2). In an automatic speed compensating device for controlling the running of a film through the sound head of a cine projector, the flywheel effecting even speed of the film is driven both by the film itself and an auxiliary motor through a speed varying arrangement controlled by film tension regulating members. The film 2 after passing over a feed sprocket 4 and through the picture gate associated with lens 5, is drawn past erase and reproducing heads 6, 7 over a sprocket 8 associated with flywheel 9, and over a jockey pulley 12 by a sprocket 15. The flywheel is thus driven by the film, but is also driven by a rubber pulley 17 or 22 on an auxiliary motor 18 according to the position of a stirrup 21 which is set according to whether a film having 16 or 24 frames per second is being employed. As the drive sprocket 15 tends to speed up and increase tension, the jockey wheel 12 lifts and through a lever 23 lifts the auxiliary motor 18 so that the pulley 17 or 22 drives on a smaller diameter of the flywheel and slows it up accordingly. As the drive sprocket speed drops the reverse action takes place.
