Abstract

2-Methyl-4-chlorophenoxy-acetic, -propionic or -butyric acid is produced by a process which comprises chlorinating the corresponding 2-methyl-phenoxy aliphatic acid sodium salt with chlorine in an aqueous medium at a temperature not exceeding 40 DEG C. in the presence of excess sodium bicarbonate. Examples in which 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid is produced are furnished. Specifications 744,475 and 793,740 are referred to.
