Abstract

A therapeutically active complex is obtained by reacting dissolved heparin with a halide or sulphate of sodium, potassium or cobalt; a halide of manganese or copper; or a hydroxide or carbonate of cobalt, manganese or copper. Preferably the heparin is dissolved in water and the inorganic substance added and the pH adjusted to a value greater than 4, and the reaction carried out at a temperature of 70 DEG to 135 DEG C., if necessary under pressure. The resulting product in solution or in solid form may be used in the treatment of coronary thrombosis and atherosclerosis. Specified inorganic substances are sodium iodide, potassium iodide, manganous iodide, cobalt iodide, cobalt chloride, copper chloride, cobalt sulphate, and cobalt carbonate.ALSO:A complex obtained by reacting dissolved heparin with a halide or sulphate of sodium, potassium or cobalt; a halide of manganese or copper; or a hydroxide or carbonate of cobalt, manganese or copper (see Group IV (a)) is used in aqueous solution in the treatment of coronary thrombosis and atherosclerosis.
