Abstract

A process for preparing an acidic, silica hydro-organosol of extremely low salt-content comprises contacting an acidic hydro-organosol containing silica, water, a water-miscible organic liquid, mineral acid in an amount to give a pH between 1.8 and 4.5 and at least 0.1% by weight of a salt of such mineral acid with the hydrogen-form of a water-insoluble, strong, cation-exchange material and with the sulphate-form of a water-insoluble, anion-exchange material containing salt-forming nitrogen atoms, either simultaneously or successively, and at a temperature below 30 DEG C. until the hydro-organosol contains less than 0.01% by weight of said salt, contact with the anion-exchange material ceasing before pH exceeds 4.5. If the hydro-organosol is first contacted with the strong cation-exchange material and then with the sulphate form of the anion-exchange material, the initial sol has a pH of 3-4.5 and is maintained in contact with the cation-exchange material until the pH is between 1.8 and 2.5 and then is contacted with an anion-exchange material until the pH is between 3 and 4. If the sol is first treated with an anion-exchange material the hydro-organosol has a pH between 1.8 and 3.5 and the pH is not allowed to exceed 4.5. The sol is then contacted with a cation-exchange material until the pH is between 1.8 and 3.3 The resulting sol may be further treated with an anion-exchange material until the pH is between 3.5 and 4.5 and may be further treated with each kind of ion-exchange resin. If the hydro-organosol is simultaneously contacted with a mixture of the anion-exchange and cation-exchange material the initial sol generally has a pH of 2.5-4.5 and is maintained in contact with the mixture of resins at a pH between 2.5 and 4. A silica aerogel can be obtained by a process of U.S.A. Specification 2,093,454. Specifications 649,896, 654,850, and U.S.A. Specifications 2,341,907, 2,366,007, 2,366,008, 2,591,573, 2,591,574 and 2,614,099 also are referred to.
