Abstract
855,119. Catamenial bandages and tampons. KIMBERLEY - CLARK CORPORATION. April 2, 1957 [April 9, 1956], No. 10747/57. Class 81(2) An absorbent bandage for catamenial use comprises two or more absorbent pads enclosed in a wrapper, the bandage being formed by laying the pads side by side on wrapper material and folding the pads and wrapper so that the pads are superposed with the wrapper extending across adjacent edges of the pads along one side of the bandage. Two elongated pads 14a, 14b consisting of cotton linters and crimped viscose rayon staple fibres or woodpulp, nylon and cotton fibres are laid on a gauze wrapper 15 with their ends spaced from one another. Marginal side portions 16, 17 of the wrapper are folded over the pads, the end marginal portions of the wrapper being adjusted so that the width of the wrapper beyond the pads is substantially uniform. The marginal end portions 19, 20 of the wrapper are then folded over the ends of the pads and the wrapper between the pads is then folded to superimpose the pads with folded marginal portions of the wrapper disposed between them. To make an alternative construction, strips A, B, of fibre batting are fed on to a gauze wrapper web C, the strips being severed at intervals to form pads 1a, 1b, and the space between pairs of pads being greater than the space between the pads of each pair. The web C is conveyed between ploughs 32, 33 which fold the web C over the ends of the pads. The web C is then severed adjacent one pad 1b of each pair to form a wrapper 2 leaving a web portion 5 on the other side of the other pad la. The wrappers 2 each carrying a pair of pads are conveyed at right angles to their original direction to meet a second plough 36 which superimposes one pad 1b and its contiguous wrapper portion on the other pad 1a. A third plough 37 folds the extending web portion 5 over the two pads so that it overlaps the wrapper causing the upper pad 1b to form a tampar. A drawstring 10 is fixed through one end of both pads and the wrapper by a noose knot. The tampon may then be compressed longitudinally and transversely by compression dies 39, 40 and plungers 41, 42 a depression being formed at one end for the insertion of an applicator stick. Adhesive may be painted on the wrapper for securing it when folded.
