Abstract

520,209. Catamenial tampons. SMITH & NEPHEW, Ltd., T. J., DOUGLAS, R. L:, and LOVATT, S. Nov. 12, 1938, No. 32998. [Class 81 (ii)] A catamenial tampon comprises a rectangular slab 12 of absorbent material having longitudinal slits 18 in its longer edges, or two or more such slabs superimposed, in which case an inner one may be recessed to produce the recesses 18. The material is enclosed in a tubular sleeve 17 of knitted or woven material and the projecting ends of the sleeve are tucked into the slits or recesses 18 in or between the slabs of absorbent material. A withdrawal cord 20 is stitched into one end of the tampon, and the other end may be secured by stitching 21. The tampon is finally compressed into a cylinder by applying pressure first' longitudinally, and then laterally in a device as shown in Fig. 9 having a cylindrical slot 28 into which the tampon is compressed.
