A method of making a tampon comprising holding a liquid permeable cover 13 around an absorbent core of the same length so that marginal side edges of the cover overlie the core to enclose it, folding the wrapped core with the marginal side edges of the cover inside the two layer pad so formed and compressing and shaping the pad so that it is maintained in the form of a tampon without stitching. The absorbent core is wrapped in a soft mesh or reticulated cover 13 to form a composite pad, the ends 12 of the core being left exposed and the side edges 14, 15 of the cover overlapping or meeting on one face of the core. A withdrawal string 11 is secured around the pad midway between its ends and the pad is folded double with the side edges of the cover inside. The folded pad is compressed mainly in a longitudinal direction to form a cylindrical tampon.
