Abstract

851,322. Pistons. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. Sept. 29, 1958 [March 5, 1958], No. 30987/58. Class 122 (1). In a piston comprising a crown 10 with gudgeonpin bosses 14 depending therefrom and a skirt 12 cast integrally with the crown and the bosses, the bore 15 in the bosses and skirt for the gudgeonpin 16 is relieved at the sides 15a. The gudgeonpin is a running fit at the top and bottom parts of the bore 15 and the clearance at the sides permits deformation of the pin under load without inducing high stresses in the bosses. The clearance at each side of the bore 15 may be formed, as shown in Fig. 3, by an eccentrically positioned rotary tool having a radius R2 less than the radius R1 of the bore.
