Abstract

Commercial tri-n-butyl phosphate is purified by heating it with water made alkaline with an alkali metal hydroxide so as to distil p off part of the water and substances volatile with water and to transfer acidic substances to the alkaline aqueous phase and then separating the tri-n-butyl phosphate from the remaining aqueous phase. A small quantity of alkali metal hydroxide sufficient to make the water present up to a 0,5 normal solution is preferably employed and the amount of water used is preferably several times the amount of tri-n-butyl phosphate by volume. The distillation is preferably continued for not less than 50 minutes and the tri-n-butyl phosphate after separation from the aqueous phase may be washed with water to complete the removal of water-soluble impurities. Specified impurities which are stated to be removed by the process are ammonia, dibutyl phosphate, butyraldehyde, tetrabutyl pyrophosphate and n-butanol. In an example 5 volumes of water are used per volume of commercial tri-n-butyl phosphate, sodium hydroxide is used as alkali metal hydroxide in an amount of about 2% of the tri-n-butyl phosphate weight/volume, and the distillation is carried out at 90 DEG to 100 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure for about 60 minutes.ALSO:Commercial tri-n-butyl phosphate is purified by heating it with water made alkaline with an alkali metal hydroxide so as to distil off part of the water and substances volatile with water and to transfer acidic substances to the alkaline aqueous phase and then separating the tri-n-butyl phosphate from the remaining aqueous phase.
