Abstract
Crystalline sodium cyanide is obtained by the evaporation of an aqueous solution of sodium cyanide below atmospheric pressure, while maintaining in the solution between 0.2 per cent and 3 per cent of sodium hydroxide to prevent the liberation of free hydrogen cyanide. The temperature employed is preferably between 56 DEG C. and 70 DEG C. A cyclic process is described, in which the sodium cyanide is obtained by neutralizing sodium hydroxide solution with hydrogen cyanide. After partial evaporation the sodium cyanide crystals are filtered off and the filtrate is returned partly to the evaporator and partly to the neutralization step so that the concentration of the sodium hydroxide in the evaporator is kept within the permissible limits.
