Abstract
Alkylboric acid esters are produced by heating a boron trialkyl of the formula BR3, in which R represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, with a boric acid ester of the formula B(OR1)3 in which R1 represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, to a temperature exdeeding 100 DEG C. and advantageously to 200 DEG C. or higher. A monoalkylboric acid diester is generally formed, the dialkylboric acid monoester first formed being converted with disproportionation into the monoalkylboric ester and trialkyl boron. Preferably 1 mol of boron trialkyl is heated with 2 mols of a boric acid ester, possibly in a pressure vessel, to between 200 DEG and 250 DEG C. The reaction may be effected without solvents so the product is obtained directly in pure form. Aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons or ethers may be used as solvents if desired. The alkylboric acid esters produced may be hydrolysed to give the alkylboric acids or water may be split off to form the B-alkylboroxoles. The alkylboric acid esters are important as additives to engine fuels.
