1364654 Diesters of bis-(beta-hydroxyethyl)- terephthalates HALCON INTERNATIONAL Inc 27 May 1971 [28 May 1970 30 April 1971] 01644/74 Divided out of 1364653 Heading C2C A method for preparing a di-ester of bis-(betahydroxyethyl) terephthalate which diester has the formula where Ph is para-phenylene and each R is hydrogen or an alkyl group of from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, or a mixture of said diester with the corresponding mono-ester of mono-(betahydroxyethyl) terephthalate which mono-ester has the formula where Ph and R are as defined above, comprises reacting terephthalic acid with a diester of ethylene glycol and a carboxylic acid having the formula RCOOH, where R is as defined above, or a mixture of said diester with the corresponding mono-ester of ethylene glycol, in the liquid phase and in the presence of an acidic catalyst where the temperature is below 220‹ C.; the by-product aliphatic acid being retained in the reaction medium during the reaction. Examples are furnished.
