Abstract

847,675. Fuel injection engines. RICHARDO & CO. ENGINEERS (1927) Ltd. Nov. 10, 1958 [Oct. 23, 1957], No. 33130/57. Class 7(3). In a swirl type combustion chamber, between 60 and 95%, and preferably between 70 and 75 % of the fuel is injected on to the part of the combustion chamber wall adjacent the downstream side of the injection nozzle 15, Fig. 1, the remainder being delivered into the rotating air. In Fig. 1 the fuel is injected as a cone 17 the greater portion of which is directed against the chamber wall whilst the outer portion becomes mixed directly with the rotating air. In Fig. 2 the fuel is injected in two jets, e.g. by an injector of the kind denoted in Specification 617,795, the layer 26 of which is directed against the chamber wall whilst the smaller 27 is directed towards the centre of the combustion chamber. The combustion chamber may be formed as described in Specifications 777,970, 786,329 or 805,104. Specification 617,795 also is referred to.
