Abstract

846,561. Securing steer-wheels on shafts. BLUEMEL BROS. Ltd. Dec. 3, 1957 [Sept. 7, 1956], No. 27404/56. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXI] In a steering-wheel assembly for motor road vehicles two slidable non-relatively rotatable connections are provided between the steering- wheel 10 and the steering-shaft 15, the said connections being adapted to releasably retain the steering-wheel against axial movement in relation to the steering-shaft but to permit of forward movement of the steering-wheel relative to the steering-shaft in the event of the driver being subjected to sudden impact against the steering-wheel. As shown, the peripherallyserrated spigot 13 of the steering-wheel 10 is adjustably and slidably connected to the upper end of an internally-serrated sleeve 14 by means of a split collet controlled by an adjustable nut 17. The opposite end of the sleeve is slit at 18 and is connected to the peripherally-serrated steering-shaft 15 by an adjustable locking-bolt 19 extending between the split parts and serving to contract the same and hold the sleeve in frictional engagement with the shaft 15. A collapsible cover 23 extends between the lower end of the sleeve 14 and steering column bearings 16. In a modification, in place of the adjustable locking-bolt, a coiled compressionspring inside the volute spring is provided. Specifications 417,418, 457,660 and 494,902 are referred to.
