619,605. Rack and pinion gearing. MACBETH, C., and ASTON, H. Dec. 16, 1946, No. 36984. [Class 80 (i)] [Also in Group XXXI] Rack and pinion steering gear comprises a tubular housing 10 in which the tubular rack 2 is slidable, and a member 9 carrying the pinion 8 on the steering spindle 6, spring pressed at 11 to urge the pinion into close contact with the rack. A stop 12 prevents accidental disengagement of the teeth. The rack is connected to the steerable road wheels by spring mounted ball joints. The rack is hollow for lubrication purposes. Specification 619,607, [Group XXXII], is referred to.
