845,775. Rollers; ironing-machines. MANLOVE, ALLIOTT & CO. Ltd. Sept. 18, 1958 [Sept. 18, 1957], No. 29385/57. Classes 42 (2) and 138 (2). A clothed ironing roller is provided with grooves 17 in its outer surface beneath the clothing and internal ribs 18 extending transversely of the grooves, the grooves being deeper than the unribbed thickness of the roller wall 16 so that they form slots 20 where they intersect the depressions 19 between the ribs. As shown, the grooves extend axially, and the ribs circumferentially, of the roller; alternatively, the grooves may be arranged circumferentially or spirally. The roller ends are closed by plates 21 provided with trunnions 23 and bolted on to flanges 22. The clothing on the roller may consist of wire gauze or open mesh asbestos cloth, then ยข-inch of compressed steel wool padding or blanket and finally two plies of synthetic fabric such as " Terylene " (Registered Trade Mark). The trunnions 23 are hollow and may communicate with a suction-fan. Heated air may be admitted through the roller wall from the interior by providing a steam-heated pipe or drum inside the roller or by means of an external air heater connected to the roller interior by ducting.
