An ironing machine or calender comprises a heated roll 7 supported in a heated bed 5 and a heater 9 arranged above the roll 7 arranged so that articles pass over the surface of the heater 9 after leaving the roll 7. The heater 9 comprises a steam chest, and the articles are guided in contact with it by means of bands 15. The shape of the steam chest 9 is such to guide the article on to a second roll 8.
