Abstract

844,364. Copying documents. ELLAMS DUPLICATOR CO. Ltd. Oct. 5, 1956 [Oct. 6, 1955], No. 28568/55. Class 100(2) A method of producing copies of matter to be copied comprises forming a mirror image of the matter, in a composition containing a soluble dye, on a carrier, and producing impressions on copy sheets by bringing the copy sheets into contact with the carrier, each copy sheet having a solid non-hygroscopic surface coating containing a substantially non-volatile solvent for the dye, whereby an impression is produced on the coating in the absence of moisture other than that present in the atmosphere. The solvent used is a non-volatile long chain fatty alcohol (e.g. oleyl alcohol) and the coating, which is anhydrous, includes a binder for the solvent consisting of nitrocellulose and may also include a white pigment of titanium dioxide (to reduce the transparency of the coated paper) and a precipitant (e.g. phosphomolybdic acid). In an example 100 parts by weight of titanium dioxide were ground into 250 parts of oleyl alcohol and added to a solution of 60 parts of a mixture of 70 parts of nitrocellulose and 30 parts of methylated spirits, in 360 parts of n-butyl acetate. The resulting liquid was applied to one surface of a white paper and the paper heated to draw off the n-butyl acetate and methylated spirit. The coated paper was then cut into copy sheets. The mirror image was formed by coating a melted mixture of 60 parts of methyl violet, 10 parts of carnauba wax and 30 parts of petroleum jelly on paper, placing the paper coated side upwards on a metal base and placing on top a piece of white, smooth surface paper which forms the carrier. The latter was then written on with a stylus so as to transfer the coating on to the carrier in the form of a mirror image of the matter inscribed. Where a precipitant for the dye is included in the coating on the copy sheet the coating is made as above except that before application to the paper a solution of 3.85 parts of phosphomolybdic acid in 385 parts of methylated spirit is added.
