Abstract

842,256. Luminescent materials. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 30, 1958 [Jan. 2, 1958], No. 42062/58. Class 39(1). A red luminescent (>6000 Š) substance is a magnesium fluoro-germanate activated with manganese dioxide in which the germanium is partly replaced by silica and one or both of titanium and stannous oxides. It has the formula a. MgOb. HgF2 c.GeO2 p.SiO2 q.TLO2 r.SnO2 z.MnO2 where 3# a # 3À9; a + b = 4; c + p + q + r = 1; 0À10 # p + q + r # 0À40; 0À01 # p # 0À36 0 # q, r # 0À36, 0À1 # p/q+ r # 9À0 and 0À005 # z # 0À020. The constituents are heated in air at a temperature of 1,000- 1200‹C for between 1 and 10 hours. The preferred composition differs from above in that 0À03 # p # 0À28; 0 # q, r # 0À28 0À4 # p/q + r # 2À5. Examples are given utilising TiO 2 and SnO 2 both together and separately and the luminescence of the compound is compared with that of the original germanate. The material may be coated on the outer bulb of a high pressure mercury vapour lamp or on a reflector. Specification 701,033 is referred to.
