Abstract
466,503. Luminescent screens. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and RANDALL, J. T. Nov. 28, 1935, No. 33051. [Class 98 (i)] [Also in Group XL] A luminescent material adapted to be excited by the rays from a mercury vapour discharge lamp consists of a matrix mainly of cadmium silicate with an activating impurity preferably manganese. The material is prepared by mixing pure cadmium oxide with a silica prepared by the reaction between silicon tetrachloride and water, followed by vacuum drying of the silica at 150‹ C. The mixture is approximately in the proportion of 1 part of cadmium oxide to two parts of silica, and manganese chloride is added in sufficient quantity to give À5 per cent of manganese in the final product. The mixture is dried in vacuo at 180‹ C. for 3 or 4 hours in a silica boat and the temperature is raised slowlv so that it reaches 1000‹ C. in 2 hours. It is maintained at this temperature for about 1 hour, then cooled and powdered. The material has a rose-white colour under the rays from a mercury vapour and argon lamp, but the colour may be modified by the addition of other substances such as calcium tungstate.
