Abstract
721,596. Luminescent materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and McKEAG, A. H. May 28, 1952 [June 8, 1951], No. 13648/51. Class 39 (1) Luminescent material consists of a lithium cadmium silicate, composed of the oxides 'of lithium, cadmium and silicon in proportions such that the molecular ratio of Li 2 O: CdO is 1:1 and the molecular ratio of Li 2 O: SiO 2 is in the range of 1:1 to 1:2 inclusive, activated by manganese, so as to be excited by ultra-violet radiation of 2537 Š from a low pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp or by cathode rays from a cathoderay tube. Examples of materials are Li 2 O. CdO. SiO,. 1¢Li 2 O, 1¢CdO, 2SiO 2 and Li 2 O, CdO. 2SiO 2 , and materials having intermediate compositions or mixtures thereof. The materials can be prepared by heating together the oxides of Li, Cd and Si together with a compound of manganese, the oxides being either initially present as such or formed by chemical reaction or decomposition during the heating. The proportion of manganese present in the starting material is in the range of 0.01 per cent. to 5 per cent., preferably 0.01 per cent. to 1 per cent., by weight of the total weight of the oxides of Li, Cd and Si in the product of the heating. The heating is carried out at a temperature of the order of 850 C. to 1,000‹ C., and may be carried out in two or more steps, the material being ground between heating steps. The starting material may consist of silica, lithium carbonate, cadmium carbonate and either manganese carbonate or manganese chloride. Several specific examples are described.
