Abstract

737,913. Luminescent materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and JENKINS, H. G. June 3, 1952 [June 1, 1951], No. 13080/51. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (1). A high-pressure mercury vapour electric discharge lamp having the envelope mounted within a sealed glass outer jacket has luminescent material, having an optimum working temperature not less than 120‹ C. and an efficiency at 200‹ C. greater than that at room temperature, coated on a surface of at least one screen mounted within the outer jacket and spaced from both the lamp envelope and the outer jacket, the arrangement being such that in normal operation of the lamp the screen attains a temperature of not less than 200‹ C. Luminescent materials referred to are magnesium germanate or fluorogermanate activated by manganese, magnesium arsenate activated by manganese and barium strontium lithium silicates activated by cerium with or without manganese as described in Specification 737,914. The screen carrying the luminescent material may consist of a transparent or translucent vitreous hollow cylinder surrounding the inner envelope and the outer jacket can be of an opal or other diffusing nature, such as silica coated, and so designed that in normal operation of the lamp the mean temperature of the surface of the jacket does not exceed 150‹ C. The outer jacket can be provided with a coating of a luminescent material, e;g. blue fluorescing zinc sulphide, which has a lower operating temperature than the luminescent material on the screen and which is excited by long-wave ultra-violet radiation passing through the screen. The outer glass jacket may be spherical and may contain a filling of oxygen at less than atmospheric pressure and the inner lamp envelope may be a cylindrical quartz bulb containing a filling of mercury and argon. The lamp is operated with the axis of the cylindrical screen carrying the luminescent material vertical so as not to prevent the circulation of convection currents in the gas in the outer jacket. Auxiliary electrode starting means are provided.
