Abstract

841,976. Tanks. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. Oct. 21, 1958 [Oct. 24, 1957], No. 33609/58. Class 69 (1). A float unit for use in the construction of circular floating screens for tanks consists of a tray 1, having the form of an annular sector, and a lid 3, covering the tray and sealed therewith around the entire periphery of the tray, the tray and a stiffening member 2 being provided with flanges 4, 5, respectively, and the ratio of the length of the outer arcuate edge of the unit to its width being # or a simple multiple of #. When the float unit is assembled flanges 4, 5 and the edge of lid 3 are superimposed and sealed together whereby the interior of the unit is rendered gas-tight. The composite flange so formed is drilled at intervals about its periphery to provide securing means for the attachment of each float unit to adjacent float units. The float units may be connected together to form a circular screen, the outermost ring of float units being cemented to a ring of apron units 6 (Fig. 6) each consisting of a horizontal flange 7, a vertical corrugated wall 8 and an upper horizontal flange 9. Stiffening sections 10 strengthen the wall 8.
