Abstract

Animal fibres or hair are dyed by applying, at a temperature below 50 DEG C., a solution of a dyestuff in an aqueous alcohol which is chemically inert with respect to the dye and the fibres, the alcohol constituting at most 10% by weight of the aqueous alcohol and being miscible with water in the proportion in which it is present and being selected from butylalcohol, aralkanols such as benzyl alcohol or b -phenylethyl alcohol, cycloaliphatic alcohols such as cyclohexanol, heterocyclic alcohols such as furfuryl alcohol, and mixtures thereof. The solution may also contain an organic acid such as lactic acid or an organic solvent as employed in Specification 819,184. The dyestuffs employed require no chemical transformation and include acid, direct, basic, dispersed acetate, premetallised, nigrosine and induline dyes. Examples are given.
