Abstract

A hair-dyeing composition comprises an aqueous solution or dispersion of a coloured substance which has an affinity for human hair, and an organic solvent for the coloured substance which is insoluble or only slightly soluble in water, the solubility of the coloured substance in the organic solvent at the temperature of dyeing being greater than its solubility in water. A "coloured substance" is defined as a dyestuff or a water-insoluble coloured organic compound. When the organic solvent is insoluble in water an aqueous emulsion containing the coloured substance may be used. The composition may contain also a solvent miscible with both water and the organic solvent, e.g. when the organic solvent is "Alphanol" (Registered Trade Mark) isopropyl alcohol may be used as the additional solvent. The composition may be applied directly to the hair or it may be formed on the hair by (1) applying to the hair the organic solvent either alone or as a solution or emulsion in water or an organic liquid, e.g. ethyl alcohol, and subsequently applying an aqueous solution or dispersion of the coloured substance; (2) applying the coloured substance to the hair in the form of an aqueous solution or dispersion and subsequently applying the organic solvent either directly or as a solution or emulsion in water or in an organic solvent; or (3) applying the organic solvent and coloured substance to the hair simultaneously and then treating with water. Specified organic solvents are amyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol and amyl lactate or, according to the Provisional Specification, n-butanol, ethyl acetate, thymol, acridine or cyclohexanone. Specified coloured substances include Carbolan Brilliant Blue 2R, Rhodamine B, Chlorazol Fast Red F, and Orasol Red B.
