Abstract

Carbon black is produced by the thermal decomposition of a hydrocarbon, e.g. methane or a crude oil or crude oil residue, by means of an A.C. or D.C. hierarc which is passed between carbon electrodes. The hydrocarbon is preferably injected into the decomposition chamber as a liquid or gas or vapour at a point where the temperature is above the decomposition temperature of the hydrocarbon, and is more preferably injected around the arc.
