Abstract
A process for the dehydrogenation of terpenetype compounds comprises mixing terpenes and sulphur with an inert hydrocarbon diluent and heating the mixture to a dehydrogenation temperature, preferably between 185 DEG and 190 DEG C. The terpene-type compounds are preferably those which yield guaiazulene upon dehydrogenation such as guaiol, guaiene, partheniol, aromadendrene ledol, ledene and a -gurjunene. The hydrocarbon diluent is preferably used in an amount of approximately twice that of the terpene. In typical examples, guaiac wood oil or guaiene, paraffin wax and sulphur are heated for 1-1 1/2 hours under a slight vacuum until all the sulphuretted hydrogen is evolved. The resulting guaiazulene is then distilled off and may be purified further.
