Abstract
Unsaturated gaseous aliphatic hydrocarbons such as ethylene and acetylene are obtained by the pyrolysis of a liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon at above 700 DEG C. by contact with a hot combustion gas for 10-4 to 10-1 second followed by chilling wherein the combustion gas is obtained by adding a hydrocarbon to a first hot combustion gas whereby the hydrocarbon is vaporized and cracked and burning the product in the presence of an oxygen containing gas to obtain a second combustion gas used in the pyrolysis. The first combustion gas having a temperature above 1500 DEG C. is obtained by burning hydrogen carbon monoxide and/or methane, e.g. obtained from the reaction products. The hydrocarbon added at this stage may be a high boiling hydrocarbon and may include tarry residues; the mixture is maintained at above 800 DEG C. for 10-4 to 10-1 second before adding oxygen and burning. Steam may be added to control the temperature. The hydrocarbon to be pyrolysed may be preheated to 25 DEG -400 DEG C. In a preferred process, both hydrocarbons are obtained by distillation of a single crude or purified mineral oil, the overhead being pyrolysed and the residue being burned.
