Abstract
Hard, dense, ceramic compositions which may be moulded to exact size without shrinkage, e.g. for use as cutting tools, dies, and guides, are prepared by hot pressing, at 1400 DEG to 1700 DEG C. and preferably at 1000 to 5000 p.s.i., a mixture of 40% to less than p 95% of substantially pure alpha alumina and more than 5% and up to 60% of chromium sesquioxide, both substances having a particle size of less than 10 microns. The alumina may be replaced in part by 1% to 70% by weight of one or more of the metals chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, iron, manganese, cobalt and nickel, of particle size less than 15 microns, but must be present in at least 20% by weight of the composition.
