Abstract
837,175. Heating pebbles and other granular materials. SIMON-CARVES Ltd. March 21, 1958 [Dec. 9, 1957], No. 9077/58. Class 64(2) [Also in Group XII] Pebbles to be heated by contact with hot gases pass down a shaft furnace comprising a long upright container 7 open at both ends and projecting through the upper wall of a lower container 2 to form a ring space 23, a downwardly tapering insert 3 in the lower container below the bottom of the upper container, a downwardly flared inlet or outlet pipe 5 for hot gas in the upper container and an outlet or inlet for hot gas from the ring space 23. The pipe 5 (which may be telescopic) and ring space 23 are connected through valves to the hot gas supply and to the discharge outlet, so that the direction of gas flow may be reversed. Cold gas, which may be the scrubbed waste gas from the process, is fed to the space around the insert 3 to cool material passing to a downward tapering discharge conduit 4.
